Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing can normally be defined as finding possible leads and/or generating sales from potential customers that are surfing the Internet.

For quite some time this has meant trying to get your website into Google (and other) search engine rankings so that it shows up on the first page of results when a potential clients searches for your type of product or service online.

This has become something of a mysterious black art. There are many specialists and consultants who make their living by working with businesses to try and get their websites on to the first page of Google’s search engine results for the keywords phrases that everyone thinks will create the most sales or new leads. This service is called SEO (search engine optimization).

Internet marketing also includes PPC (pay per click) advertising. These are ads (when you do a Google search, that show up on the right hand side of the page). These are written by advertisers who are targeting specific keywords or phrases that people are searching for. Every time a person clicks on the ad, they are sent to the advertiser’s website, and the advertiser is charged for that “click”. This is how Google makes billions of dollars and if possible the largest advertising company in the world.

More recently something called Web 2.0 has become popular. Website sites such as Youtube, Facebook and Myspace to name a few are where many people are joining and becoming involved in social networking online.

Here, the most efficient advertising will be “viral” and more “virtual word of mouth”. This is much more complex than search engine optimization and pay per click advertising, and is something local businesses need to be aware of.

How this will effect business is still to be seen but it does offer opportunity in many ways including using the sites to help with SEO (search engine optimisation) and your ranking in Google search results.
